Dora Maar was a French artist, photographer, and poet born in 1907. She was known for her dark and surreal photography, as well as her tumultuous personal life. Maar was also the muse and lover of the famous painter Pablo Picasso.
She initially studied painting but turned to photography in the 1930s and became a member of the Surrealist group. Her images often incorporated experimental techniques such as solarization and photomontage, and were considered ahead of their time.
Maar was also involved in the political scene, and her photographs documented the social and cultural issues of her time, including the Spanish Civil War.
Later in her life, Maar turned to spirituality and became a devout Catholic. She continued to create art until her death in 1997. Despite her significant contributions to the art world, Maar sadly remains an often-overlooked figure in art history.
